Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis measured brainwave activity of 264 women as they viewed a series of 55 color slides that contained various scenes from water skiers to snarling dogs to partially-clad couples in sensual poses.What they found may seem like a "no brainer." When study volunteers viewed erotic pictures, their brains produced electrical responses that were stronger than those elicited by other material that was viewed, no matter how pleasant or disturbing the other material may have been. This difference in brainwave response emerged very quickly, suggesting that different neural circuits may be involved in the processing of erotic images."That surprised us," says first author Andrey P. Anokhin, Ph.D., research assistant professor of psychiatry. "We believed both pleasant and disturbing images would evoke a rapid response, but erotic scenes always elicited the strongest response."As subjects looked at the slides, electrodes on their scalps measured changes in the brain's electrical activity called event-related potentials (ERPs). The researchers learned that regardless of a picture's content, the brain acts very quickly to classify the visual image. The ERPs begin firing in the brain's cortex long before a person is conscious of whether they are seeing a picture that is pleasant, unpleasant or neutral.But when the picture is erotic, ERPs begin firing within 160 milliseconds, about 20 percent faster than occurred with any of the other pictures. Soon after, the ERPs begin to diverge, with processing taking place in different brain structures for erotic pictures than those that process the other images."When we present a stimulus to a subject - for example, when a picture appears on a screen - it changes ongoing brain activity in certain ways, and we can detect those changes," Anokhin says.Pictures appeared on a screen at 12 to 18 second intervals, and each picture remained on the screen for about 6 seconds. The subjects were instructed to do nothing other than look at the pictures.A great deal of past research has suggested that men are more visual creatures than women and get more aroused by erotic images than women. Anokhin says the fact that the women's brains in this study exhibited such a quick response to erotic pictures suggests that, perhaps for evolutionary reasons, our brains are programmed to preferentially respond to erotic material."Usually men subjectively rate erotic material much higher than women," he says. "So based on those data we would expect lower responses in women, but that was not the case. Women have responses as strong as those seen in men."Because the electroencephalogram (EEG) technology cannot pinpoint specific brain structures involved in this visual processing, Anokhin says it's not clear exactly which circuits are reacting to these visual scenes. Recent studies in primates recorded the electrical activity of single neural cells within the brain and have shown that the frontal cortex contains neurons that can discriminate between different categories of visual objects such as dogs versus cats. Whether or not the human prefrontal cortex contains special neurons that are "tuned" for sex remains a subject for future studies."The newer and more advanced technologies such as MRI and PET provide much better spatial resolution," he says. "Those methods can better localize areas of brain activity, but ERPs have a much better temporal resolution. The EEG can record neuronal activity in real time. When measuring activity in milliseconds, any delay is undesirable."Most of Anokhin's research is centered on the genetic and neurobiological bases of behavioral traits that might be associated with increased vulnerability to alcoholism and addictive disorders. He believes this study could contribute to that work by detecting differences between responses to images with different emotional significance. One of the last bastions of privilege and male exclusivity in Britain is to fall. After hundreds of years, gentlemen's clubs will be forced to open their doors to women in a government overhaul of equality laws.Clubs such as White's, whose members include David Cameron, the Tory party leader, will be forced to accept female members. A review by the Department for Trade and Industry designed to plug the gaps in existing equality laws, is examining ways of banning single-sex drinking and dining clubs. The revamp would also include working men's clubs.But the move is likely to provoke grumblings over the brandies if the Government wipes out centuries of tradition. And it will infuriate Tory MPs who accuse the Government of unnecessary interference. Nicholas Soames, Tory MP for Mid Sussex and a member of both White's and Pratt's, said: "I would have thought they have got better things to do. It is a load of nonsense."The end of men-only dens is being welcomed by many. The broadcaster Jennie Bond said: "It's about bloody time. Having clubs where membership is barred to half the population is absurd, ridiculous and antediluvian. It's pompous, astonishing and horrible. It really gets my hackles up."Amanda Platell, the commentator and a former aide to William Hague, said: "I'd like to see their doors open to women but I wouldn't want to be one of the women walking in." A catch-all equality Bill, to be introduced before the next election, will streamline equality laws and force single-sex clubs to justify their exemption. It will also extend fresh protection from discrimination to groups not covered by current discrimination laws.These include transsexuals, who will gain fresh protection and whom hotel owners will no longer be able to deny a room. Shops and other companies providing "goods and services" would also be covered, giving transsexuals the same protection as homosexuals.Only those single-sex clubs where gender is integral to the purpose of their existence, such as women's gyms or male gender support groups such as Fathers 4 Justice, will be allowed to retain their exclusivity."The issue of single-sex clubs is very much something that is in the mix for the equality bill. Men-only clubs are something that is being looked at. There are different ways we could do it and that is what they are looking at," said a senior Whitehall source.The single equality Bill will consolidate 20 to 30 items of legislation outlawing discrimination on the basis of age, race, sex, disability, religion and sexual orientation.One minister said: "The equality Bill is examining private clubs. Our view is that it is hard to justify their existence. We are run by a small group of volunteers and challenge the Home Office, governments, police and press for the sexual freedom of consenting adults. We hold an annual conference in London.The Sexual Freedom Coalition was formed in April 1996 to counter a wave of state repression in the UK against erotic events and products. The final straw was the forced cancellation of the 10th Anniversary of the Sex Maniacs Ball. A march was organised as a protest. It started in Soho and ended at 10 Downing Street where a petition was presented to the Prime Minister.The cancellation of the Sex Maniacs Ball was just one of the actions being taken against erotic events. The organisers of Club Whiplash were being prosecuted for running their club. The SFC distributed 7,500 leaflets to the Council Taxpayers if Wandsworth highlighting the cost to them of such action, over £1/4 million.The SFC has sought dialogue with the Vice Squad and Customs about sex and the law, but they would not meet us even to discuss ways to improve the current situation. Despite this inertia by the authorities, the SFC has continued to maintain a contact with other interest parties and following a wide consultation, we have drawn up a Sexual Freedom Bill. The Bill will bring British sex laws into line with the European Union, it will end censorship, discrimination and most importantly defend the rights of consenting adults.All key decisions have been made at open democratic meetings of supporters. Further work is done by working groups - like the Internet Working Group who compiled this page.The SFC also organised the Sexual Freedom Parade and delivered the first instalment of our National Petition "Sex Please We're British !" together with our Bill to the Home Office on 21st June 1997.
